Mode of teaching and learning: The best of distance and contact education have been merged to provide an exciting mode of teaching and learning. While the BEd (Intermediate Phase) is essentially a distance education programme, much of the isolation experienced by distance education students is removed through interactive online materials and contact with fellow students and lecturers. The learning management system (LMS) used to deliver the modules provides opportunities for self-study of the learning materials, online research and learning activities. It also allows students to interact with lecturers, fellow students and the institution. In addition, there is limited contact tuition. Contact sessions take place in two- or three-week cycles, depending on the subject. These compulsory sessions occur on Friday afternoons and Saturdays to enable students to work, if necessary. In this way the Institute takes the interactivity and connectivity of distance education to a new level. Students need to have a personal computer or laptop with Wi-Fi access to participate in the programme.
Teaching Practice forms an important part of the curriculum of the BEd (Intermediate Phase) programme and the teaching and learning approach at the Institute. The purpose of Teaching Practice is to enable students to learn from observation and practice. They will be able to apply learned skills in the classrooms of a variety of schools, including those of the Two Oceans Education Foundation and private and public schools in the Western Cape region. If students are already working as teachers or teacher assistants in a school, they will be able to do their teaching practice at the school where they are employed.
